Baby Steps

The first substep of a big step toward our big journey into the hinterland has been accomplished: my Louisiana driver’s license has been officially translated and stamped by the Shanghai Interpreter’s Association. Sitting around in the office with nothing going on other than gradual advances into my reading of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, I decided now, as always, is the best time to take action. I hopped on my electric scooter, Black Thunder, and rode it 10 km each way from Western Shanghai all the way to the Bund and down the “bike and scooter artery” at the governor-dictated speed of 40 km/hr, winding and weaving through daytime traffic to Nanjing Road and the illustrious Association.

Next step: going to the driving bureau and picking up my 1,000 questions that need to be memorized for the written test. Then we get a car (which are getting cheaper lately – thanks, economic calamity!), and take to the open road on a course that is yet to be decided. Why’s all this important? Because now the rock is rolling. More to come.
